CARLY Smoothie Recipes (2024)

Yes, it’s getting colder. Yes, I’ve been drinking hot coffee (and hot coffee drinks) like it’s my job. Yes, I’m dreaming of warm sweaters and cozy boots.

But I’m totally having a smoothie moment right now.

Not exactly the best thing while it’s cooling off outside, but it’s still delicious. And I’ve been cravingall kinds lately. I guess it started because I was feeling so sick all the time. I neverhave stomach issues; I’m much more of a migraine girl. But all the stress in August/September (there was plenty to go around) at work literally had me sick to my stomach every day. Thinking about food was making me even sicker. A couple of other girls were having similar issues (feeling sick at work is not fun, but misery certainly loves company) and someone suggested smoothies.

Hooked!

There’s a Juice Generation down the street from me and I’ve been going there a little bit too frequently. Some of the smoothies I like, but I really would rather make them at home. It’s cheaper and I can really better choose what I want and don’t want in it! A couple of my friends have Magic Bullets and let me tell you: I’m jealous. I think I’ve been brainwashed by one too many infomercials. When I saw that Rue La Lahad a Magic Bullet looking thing online, I jumped on it. (Well, first I researched it on Amazon and it had pretty amazing reviews!)

It’s the Cuisinart 32oz Stainless Steel Portable Chopper (on Amazon). I can’t wait for it to get here so I can start smoothie-ing it up.

To get prepared (and more excited) for its arrival, I’m pulling some smoothie recipes from around the internet. Hopefully this will also hold me accountable for using the darn thing! Disclaimer, I also have no idea if smoothies are actually healthy or not. But they can’t be terrible for you right?

Green Ginger Peach // Martha Stewart

I am obsessed with ginger. I love absolutely anything that has ginger and so I feel like this will absolutely be a winner. It even has spinach in it, so there’s a little hidden green in there. Plus, this is a great recipe to finally put my honey from the Waldorf to good use!

Watermelon Strawberry// Food Fanatic

Maybe a little summery, but I’m not complaining. I think this would be super refreshing for mid-afternoons or post workouts (ifI worked out… eep).

Beetroot, Carrot, Apple, and Mint// Chantelle Grady

All of her recipes look amazing, but particularly this one. All sorts of amazing. Sign me up.

Hearty Fruit and Oat// Martha Stewart

Confession: I don’t eat breakfast. It’s a terrible habit I’m in, but I typically dig right into work and skip over the eating thing. Of course, 2pm rolls around and I’ve forgotten about lunch and I’m two seconds away from fainting. I think this smoothie is perfect for filling up in the morning, right?

Again, ginger? Love it already. Now I’m really curious how the whole oats-in-a-smoothie thing works. Must try.

Okay, now I must know… What are some of your favorite smoothie recipes? Anything I should absolutely try (or read)?

xoxo

I have a magic bullet and I love it. The trick is to add spinach to all your smoothies. The spinach taste is masked by the yummier ingredients but you still get all of the nutrition. My go-to recipe is spinach, mixed berries, half a banana, light yogurt, a little protein powder, and flax seeds. Super healthy but still yummy!

I was on a smoothie-roll before summer, had it every day for breakfast and I loved adding some ginger, it's suppose to be such a super food and it tastes great. Just a tip, when you add oats in a smoothie, soak them in some water or milk first (just for a couple of minutes) otherwise I'll taste- and have a strange texture. Hope your smoothies taste good!

I have a smoothie every morning, no matter the weather. My favorite: orange juice, strawberries, raspberries, and pineapple. Yum!

Smoothies can be really healthy for you! I have one almost everyday. If you want a different way to get in some of your leafy greens, just add some kale at the bottom before your fruit. You won't even taste the kale (or see it, if you're using dark berries, etc.). It's so good!

I think they are healthy, the point is I don't have anything to make them and the morning I'm always in a hurry (I have 15 min from when I get up to when I leave).
But they could make a interesting breakfast…keeping them in the fridge is good? I mean, if I do one in the evening and drink it in the morning after can't be so bad if I keep them in the fridge, right? *new need coming*

Love smoothies for a fast snack or breakfast because I can make it balanced and packed with produce (dietitian…don't judge). My favorite combo is beet, carrot, apple and ginger. If I need something long lasting I love Greek yogurt, banana, peanut butter and ground flax seed.

If you ever become obsessed with smoothies, you would love the Vitamix blender. It's literally the Rolex of blenders, but I love mine!

Smoothies can be really healthy, but you definitely have to watch out for hidden downfalls, like tons of excess sugar. When you order them out try to check out the nutrition info if you can. And if you make them at home you know exactly what's in them! I always make mine with a whole banana, frozen peach or mango, a little vanilla almond milk (again, careful with the really sugary ones) and tons of spinach.

Linda Wagner has awesome tips and recipes on her site (she juices, but I just blend the same ingredients as a smoothie) and this Whole Living article has 40 recipes: http://www.wholeliving.com/135929/smoothie-recipes/@center/155850/healthy-breakfasts?xsc=pin_wl_healthysmoothies_smoothierecipes

I love smoothies! When I left for college I got a magic bullet & I seriously cannot imagine not having it. It's amazing!! I sometimes even make smoothies for dinner when I am not too hungry. Two great tricks I learned are add some greek yogurt to add protein, & add a handful of spinach (you won't taste it!) to get your greens in. I can't wait to hear if you like your new blender!

Smoothies have been my go-to breakfast lately! I just did a post about my favorite Blueberry-Watermelon smoothie recipe too. I recently bought a Cuisinart blender/food processor combination so I can make soups since the weather is getting colder (soup = warm smoothies). You'll love yours!

I second the tip about soaking oats. I like to put oats, almond milk and/or plain greek yogurt, spinach, banana, some kind of berries, and sometimes peanut butter in my smoothies. Oftentimes, I place all of that in the blender pitcher at night and leave it in the refrigerator, then just add ice and blend in the morning. No excuse for skipping breakfast that way!

as a fan and a dietetic intern [one step away from being a dietitian!!], i can tell you that a smoothie is all about what you put in it! if anything, a lot of people worry about the sugar content- but that's all natural sugar from fruit. if you want to slow that absorption down, consider adding in protein [powder form, tofu, yogurt] and/or a source of fat [nuts, nut butters].
I love my afternoon pick me up smoothie!
