Do you ever wonder, what’s the deal with seasonal decor?

Why do people decorate their homes to mark the seasons as if they need the visual cues to know what day it is?

Can’t they just look at the calendar? Or out the window!

Well, for me it has everything to do with filling the needs brought on by the climate outside and harnessing the best of what the season has to offer and using those benefits to add comfort to my daily living.

So just like in winter when I look to make my home feel cozy, in spring I’m eager to throw off the blankets and celebrate the rebirth of all things lovely!

Spring Decor Elements

To that end, there is very specific imagery associated with spring, and utilizing the best of those concepts to refresh your home is what today’s post is all about. Sure, time in the garden means running into an occasional worm or two, but I choose to focus more on the pleasant aspects of the season.

Here are 8 design elements that are emblematic of spring. Use them to add cheer to a home that’s itching to come out of its winter slumber!

Spring Flowers

This always seems to be number one on my list, but for florals to be truly characteristic of the season, I love to start spring with the classic bulb flowers. My favorite combination usually mixes grape hyacinths with pinkish tulips and sunny yellow daffodils. The bonus is the intoxicating scent of the hyacinths wafting through the home.

Another favorite is lilies of the valley, which will always remind me of a robust patch in my dad’s garden.

As the season progresses, I move into lilacs and peonies, with the certainty that following the gardening calendar is akin to eating fresh farm to table foods. Yes, you can get tulips all year at the grocery, but there’s something about having them in springtime that makes it seem like they’ve come fresh from a nearby field in bloom.

Garden Elements

The reawakening of the garden brings with it a renewed interest in the items that typically accessorize the garden. Planters and urns, particularly vintage cast iron, are a joy to decorate with. Likewise, I enjoy using garden statuary indoors.

Indeed anything that is reminiscent of gardening signals the season, from seed packets and plant markers to watering cans and moss.

Even picket fencing can evoke the feeling, along with a charming and colorful bicycle propped up in just the right way.

Clean Clear Colors

As anyone whose been reading this blog for a while knows, I love to decorate in neutrals, particularly whites. But it’s not because I don’t like color. Quite the contrary, white and pale neutrals provide the prefect backdrop for pops of color and spring is the ideal time to highlight clean clear colors.

I tend to prefer clean colors all year long and have never been a fan of dusty or dirty tones, but this is ever more the case when spring arrives. Whether the palette is vibrant with cheerful brights or tranquil and gentle with pale pastel hues, clean clear colors have a way of expressing an optimistic outlook and this is, no doubt, why I like them so much.

Use pillows and throws to add color in a snap, plus florals and decorative accents like vases and glassware.

Birds and Nests

I’m focusing this post more on spring than Easter, so I’ve held off the eggs and bunnies for another time. But birds and nests are fair game for the entire spring season.

In fact the sound of chirping birds is one of my favorite early cues that spring is arriving and I perceive it as almost musical in nature.

Using birds in your decor can be as simple as displaying wooden or resin birds, or you may like bird motifs in artwork, textiles or dishes for the table.

Nests are great for adding a woodsy touch which works wonderfully with several of the other elements on this list. Fill them with moss and tuck your birds inside, or for Easter serve them up with a cluster of eggs.

Rattan and Wicker

Nothing says warm weather quite like wicker and rattan and it’s delightful to see how popular they’ve become. In recent years, woven furniture styles have become noticeably updated, even ‘on trend’. But you don’t need to change your furniture to celebrate the season, when there are plenty of ways to enjoy these materials in decorative accents.

Try a market basket full of flowers to signal the season, or storage pieces and baskets in every shape and size. These work exceptionally well with the other woodsy bits on the list, as anything that underscores nature is perfect for this season.

Spring Branches

And while we’re on the subject of woodsy, let’s give a mention to branches, as there are several that are notably springlike when used in decor. First and foremost, I’d give a call out to cherry blossom branches, the quintessential sign of spring.

If you live in an area that has a cherry blossom park, you can’t help but know exactly when they bloom. But even if you are lacking that sweet luxury, there are wonderful faux branches that are readily available.

Other spring branches that are fun to decorate with include dogwood, puss* willows, forsythia and tulip magnolia, to name just a few. Put them in a tall vase on the floor or on a table and enjoy the magnificent display.

Room Fragrance

Of course the most obvious way to add seasonal aroma to your home is with fresh flowers, but don’t underestimate the pleasure of scented candles, potpourri, diffusers and other room fragrances. And while they typically are scented with floral notes, they last longer than the flowers and can be pretty in and of themselves.

Coarse Weave Fabrics

There’s no question that natural fabrics are ubiquitous in the spring, with cotton and linen leading the way, but the coarser the fabric weave, the more seasonal it becomes. Think burlap, grain sack, and canvas, as well, with coarse knits rounding out the package of textured fabrics to work with in your decor.

As the weather begins to warm, I can’t help but get excited, as the awakening of nature forecasts good things to come.

I just love to decorate my home with these elements of spring, but nothing beats the actual patio and garden that will be in use very very soon!
