She grew up in St. Catharines, Ontario, and was introduced to video games through her elder brother. Mo, Pokimane’s three years older sibling, passed down his old games and cartridges from the Game Boy, Nintendo DS, and Wii to his little sister.

While in middle school, Imane began playing massively multiplayer online games like MapleStory and Endless Online. She enjoyed the customizations and socializing with other players. She was studying chemical engineering at McMaster University however later dropped out of university to pursue her full-time streaming career.

Eventually, she started streaming and signed up on Twitch in 2014. She initially played League of Legends and eventually grew so much in popularity that by 2017 she was featured in a League of Legends trailer. Besides, she also runs her own talent management company called rts.gg, which she helped set up in October 2021 and was named as its Chief Creative Officer. She has reportedly also numerous unknown investments over the years that have multiplied her wealth.

Pokimane initially signed a two-year exclusivity contract with Twitch back in 2020 and later renewed it in early 2022. Although the exact numerics of her contract have not been revealed, it is believed to be a multi-million dollar deal, considering her popularity on the platform.

Her projected monthly income before quitting the platform from customers was roughly $25,000. Besides, she is also a member of the platform’s Partner program, which enables the members to supplement their income through a variety of sources, such as advertising revenue and sponsorships.
