I just got some more driving tech-niques from Kevin Grieve and the launch of Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast is near!I plan to make a FAQ for it too so, it would be a nice idea to finish this onefirst. There´s not much stuff left to do, so I believe that by the end of MarchI´ll complete it. Besides the driving techniques, I also corrected some minorerrors and filled little things on the FAQ. Enjoy!===============================================================================Version 0.613/01/2005 - Well, first of all I removed that palmtree from the logo art. It sounded kinda stupid. I added a new section called "Game Bugs/Glitches" that contains... hummm... ahhh... You know what and I´ve added some suggestions fromseveral mails I got and the main reason I´m updating is to let you all know that this guide isn´t dead and that I´m just not working hard on finishin it because I have some college final tests and stuff of the sort, that is taking much of my time. As soon as I finish them, I´ll finish this guide. Expect a newupdate around 25-30 February. Special thanks for Gouki and Dodgymat for their valuable help in this guide.===============================================================================Version 0.523/12/2004 - Yay, the first release of the FAQ. I hope it pleases most of the people who reads it, and, as you may notice, it is quite incomplete. It has all the sections of the FAQ that I intended to make (I may, and probably will add some new sections in the future) but the Game Modes, which will have the detailed descriptions about every stage, mission and stuff of the sort. That´llcome in the next version. I don´t know if the next version will be 100% complete, since there are LOTS of stuff to add, but I´ll work hard on it on 2005. Merry XMas everyone and happy new year!===============================================================================Version 0.112/12/2004 - Added the main layout to the guide and the basic sections.=============================================================================== Section 02 - About this Guide/FAQ===============================================================================Hello there and welcome to my Outrun 2 FAQ! I´m not a professional Outrun player or anything of the sort, so don´t expect an extremely detailed FAQ withtips to get the highest scores, the best times and stuff of the sort. That is not my intention. So far. Maybe in a distant future. I´ll add general information, details, strategies, tips and some codes for the game. You can expect a new version of the FAQ with more info, detailed strategies of the missions and updates. I have no deadline to finish this FAQ entirely so I´ll add new things once in a while. As you may notice, english is not my native language, so you will find some spelling errors, some weird sentences and stuffof the sort. I would be glad you could warn me of those mistakes and forgive me for those mistakes. Thank you!=============================================================================== Section 03 - About Outrun 2===============================================================================Outrun 2 for Microsoft´s XBox is the long awaited sequel to the classic Outrun.Originally developed by Sega AM2for Arcade (running on a Chihiro board), it wasconverted to XBox by Sumo Digital.Released in Europe in 01/10/2004, and in the United States in 25/10/2004. According to GameFAQs.com, it will be released in Japan in 27/01/2005.Outrun 2 features gorgeous graphics, a brilliant soundtrack. It has several modes of gameplay and simple controls, altough it has a very high learning curve. The XBox version also features online game mode, via the XBox live and a multiplayer mode via the XBox system link, up to 4 players. =============================================================================== Section 02 - About the Author===============================================================================Hello there! This is the fourth FAQ that I am writing. I may not be very skilled in writing FAQs, but I really hope you enjoy it and that you find erything you need. You can contact me anytime you wish, but you can find more information on that on the How to Contact Me section. You can find other FAQ/Guide I wrote here:http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/44291.html=============================================================================== Section 05 - Game Basics ===============================================================================A - Game ControlsThere are eight sets of controller configurations that you can choose. I know it may sound dumb and obvious, but it is the only way to master this game.It took me several hours to learn how to drive well. To be a professional in Outrun 2 you need much more than hours of gameplay. As I am not a master Outrun2 player, I never had the intention of making this FAQ to teach you how todrive professionally. Now thanks to Gouki and Kevin Grieve, I´ve added moreenhanced techniques and strategies. Almost all of the following content wasprovided by them! Thank you very much for your help, guys! --------------------- | Starting Techniques | ---------------------Note: There is a difference between starting methods, using automatic or manual transmission.Using Automatic Transmission: Hit the accelerator just in between the counter says 1 and "start", for the fastest start. There is no difference between 5 or 6 gear cars in automatic. 6 gear cars are slower starters in automatic transmission.Using Manual Transmission: Now there is a big difference between 5 and 6 gearedcars. - 5 Gear Cars: Hit the accelerator just in between the counter says 1 and "start, for the fastest start.- 6 Gear Cars: Before you start, shift to the second gear then make a rev in between 6000 rpm while the counter hits "start".Changing gears at the correct time is the next critical step to a great start. Each car has its own particular rev point at which to change gear. There isalso a few different ways in which to do it.1) Using the shift indicator light. By counting the number of flashes of thelight you can accurately judge when to shift gear. This method has itsdrawbacks online as it seems to lag slightly but for TT it is fine.2) By watching the speed of your car. Preferably out the corner of your eye asit can be a pain negotiating the first corner on palm beach watching thespeedometer only to clip the wall.3) Probably the best way is to watch the rev counter needle itself for italmost reaching the terminal revs of the car. ------------ | Drifting | ------------As you will notice, drifting is the most important technique that you need tomaster in this game. There are to ways of drifting. One using manual, and the other, automatic transmission. Using automatic transmission may be kinda harderthat using manual transmission. To perform the drift, in first place, you need to be with a considerable speed.100 km/h (~63 mph). The higher the speed you have, the better and faster is thedrift you make.- Using automatic transmission: hold the accelerator at all time, steer into the bend, quickly press the brake, then release it immediately. Then perform a drift. It may be kinda hard to perform that, but with a little training you will get it!-Using manual transmission: steer into the bend, then, very quickly shift one gear back to make your car slip in the road, start the drift in the direction you want then shift one gear up again to avoid loosing too much speed.Use multiple drifts. Sequences of curves don´t need multiple drifts. Simply steer to the opposite side while drift to change your drift and maintain your high speed.Car handling while drifting: You can steer to the left and to the right whileperforming a drift, to adjust the angle of the drift.Try to drift as less as possible! I know it may sound contraditory, but try to re-straighten your car as fast as possible after a drift. While drifting you donot gain speed, so quit drifting as fast as you can to increase speed again. ---------- | Deadzone | ---------- This is something refered to but never fully understood. It is basically havingthe wheels in a straight line while driving straight. Catching the deadzone:IE on the end of the carousel corner, on Metropolis where you slide around tothe left then need to flick right onto the straight most people just let thecar drift but it is possible with practice to get the car to exit its drift ina straight line maximising acceleration, boosting the speed you approach thenext corner. It is achieved by counter correcting the car almost into its righthand drift and at the correct time catching the deadzone ie letting go thethumbstick. So as the car just drives off in the correct direction withoutdrifting. Another method of deadzone drifts are where you have a multipledrifts and need to hug the inside line on both corners. This is an invaluablelittle trick, especially on the very last corner of desert. You have had todrift right on the kink at the top of the hill after the chicane and there isnot enough time to get the car straight to do another drift so you need tocarry on the drift in another direction but the car always runs out wide to theverge sometimes scrubbing off speed. So, what can you do to stop this? Let gothe throttle? Press the brake? Nope! Get your eyes onto the car you are drivingon screen. When it is changing direction from drifting right to left there willbe a minute window of opportunity where the car will be straight on yourscreen. This you will need to exploit and it will take a lot of practice as timing is critical. Just as the car gets straight you need to change gear downup. Just like you are doing a drift. IE 5-4-5. or 6-5-6. this will throw thecar into the corner violently and allow you to hug the inside line shavingseconds off and allowing you to exit earlier and faster. --------------------------- | Professional Car Handling | ---------------------------To maintain higher speeds while performing a drift, there is a technique whichis called the feint steering method. This is a method to feint a steering to the wrong direction to a bend, then immediately, steer into the bend, to increase the angle of the car, steered into the bend. You can perform this as following: when a bend to the right is approaching, just before the bend starts, steer firm to the left (feint to the left), then immeadiately staar firm to the right, so that the angle of your car, stays in straight position to the bend. Just after you steered to the right, to go into the bend, press the downshift button very fast and shift up again. Now you havegained position to go into the right bend, so you don't have to drift as much anymore, as you would normally do. This method will hold up speed more while performing a drift. ----------------------------- | COUNTER STEERING AND DELAYS | -----------------------------This is a method of unsettling the car prior to drifting to allow itto accelerate it into the corner faster and tighter. By holding a tighter lineyou are shortening the ammount of ground you need to cover and allowing you toexit the drift quicker. This technique is achieved by approaching the cornernot parrallel to the road but aiming inwards toward the apex then applying fullopposite lock then full inwards lock in a rapid motion.IE swing the nose out then in. Once this has been done the car will becomealmost out of control its wheels will belch smoke now is the time to activatethe drift 5-4-5 or 6-5-6. If done correctly a visible kick will be given by thecar´s graphics on screen whereupon it will hug an unbelievably tight linearound the sharpest corner. It takes a lot of tie and patience to practise thistechnique as a lot of it is to do with correct road position and timing of thecountersteer. But the rewards are the top of the scorboards. -------------------------- | Gaining time in OutRun 2 | --------------------------Gaining time in Outrun 2: To gain a lot of time in Outrun 2, drive the shortestway possible to the finish. Try to stay as close to the innerside of a normal bend as possible. While drifting: When performing a drift, make sure the front of your car is a close to the innerside of the bend as possible, to save a lot of meters, which is a lot of time! --------------- | And remember! | ---------------Being a superb driver in this game is training AND doing the mission mode. Thishelps to remember the courses and how to take the bends correctly all the time!===============================================================================C - ProfilesThe first time you play Outrun 2, you will be prompted to create a new profile.Just put your name or nickname using the virtual keyboard and you are ready to go. While in the main menu, you can press the X Button to access the profile menu and create/delete/select the available profiles. When you move the select cursor over each profile, you can see the play time, how many A/AA/AAA ranks you got in Outrun Mission mode, how many cards you have unlocked of a total of 142 and how many of the 101 missions you have completed. The last profile you use will be automatically selected the next time you play Outrun 2.===============================================================================D - OptionsPressing the Y Button while in any menu selection will bring you the Options Menu. You can also press Start while in any race or challenge to bring you the Options Menu. As you may notice, some options are just available when pressing Y in the menu. ----------------- | General Options | -----------------Sound Volume............Adjusts the sound effects volume.Music Volume............Adjusts the music volume.Brightness..............Adjusts the brightness of the game.Arcade Difficulty.......Adjusts the difficulty for the Outrun Arcade Mode.Speed...................Toggles between km/h and mph as the default speed unit.My Ghost Cars...........Shows or not the ghost car while in Time Attack mode. -------------------- | Controller Oprions | -------------------- Configuration...........Toggles between A to H Button Configs (Explained Above)Vibration...............Swtiches on and off the controller vibration.===============================================================================E - CarsEvery race, challenge, time trial you go, you can choose several Ferraris, out of a list of available cars. Some come already unlock when you start a new gameand some others need to be unlocked by achieving certain goals. You can check how to unlock those cars in the codes and secrets sections. And, as mentioned before, I am not a professional driver. I´ll just add here a small profile of all available cars. The acceleration/handling is taken from the car selection screen and the max speed is the real max speed when you are actually driving. And of course, you can choose several colors for the Ferraris in the car selection screen by pressing the X Button. All comments and years were provided by Gouki! Finally, there arefour Chase Cards that can only be unlocked by the Unlock All Cards Password.-Thanks for Dodgymat for the Chase Cards info. Not now, but in a future version I´ll add all cards here and their description.=============================================================================== Section 08 - Game Bugs/Glitches===============================================================================Outrun 2 may be a wondefull game, but it is far from perfect. It seems that things slipped thru Sumo Digital and got into the final version of the game. I cannot be 100% sure, but those problems are present just in the PAL final and pre-release games. I´ll buy soon the US Final version and I´ll try to play the Japanese version to see wether or not those versions have the same problem. If you find another bug/glitch or if you have a different version of the game that doesn´t have one of the listed problems, please, let me know about it! - The 21/101 BugIt´s not a big deal and this won´t affect your gameplay in any form. The bug here is that, when you accomplish more than 21 missions in the Outrun Mission mode, your profile will say that you have just completed 21 of 101 missions. So don´t panic when you´re going to change your profile and see that you have completed just 21 missions, when you actually did much more. - Time Trial Route Scores not saved in PAL versionThat is somewhat frustrating but, some people have complained about not having their Time Trial Route Scores saved in their PAL versions. There´s nothing thatcan be done to avoid this, so, if you really want to have those scores, suit yourself with a pen and a piece of paper! - Car Stuck on Outrun Challenge 20This has happened to me once and it´s one of the most frustrating glitches in my opinion. It happens on Outrun Challen 20, just when you are in half of the course. It happens when you are on the Palm Beach stage (the first time) in thepart where you normally start the game (you are racing it backwards). I don´t know exactly what it is, but it seems that your car falls thru the track and gets stuck there. All your effort of about 15 minutes is wasted. You can´t get out but you can normally exit the game or wait for the time to run out.=============================================================================== Section 09 - How to Contact Me===============================================================================Well, if you have any further questions about the game, this FAQ or anything ofthe sort, do not hesitate to contact me!You can contact me by- e-mailJust send your message to shadowth AT gmail DOT comOf course, replace the spaces and the AT and COM for @ and .You can expect a reply in an average of 2 days. I won´t reply mails I can not understand. - instant messengerYou can add me to your MSN Messenger contact list.My MSN e-mail is: tomatoconveniencestore@gmail.com =============================================================================== Section 10 - Credits===============================================================================Well, I would like in first place, thank Sega/AM2 and Yu Suzuki for producing this amazing game and porting it to the XBox! This is the game that made me buyand XBox, and it is impossible to regret it!
