Tips & Tricks:

Mixing

Our number one Jello Shot tip is be creative! You can use almost any type of alcohol, and any flavor Jello. Just note that the higher the proof of the alcohol you choose, the more cold water you will need to set your shots.

30-50 proof: Use 13-ounces of alcohol and 3-ounces of cold water.

80-100 proof: Use 10-ounces of alcohol and 6-ounces of cold water.

150-200 proof: Use 6-ounces of alcohol and 10-ounces of cold water.

Layering

If you're using clear containers, layering is a perfect way to bring your presentation up a notch!

To layer your Jello Shot, just make a few different color of Jello Shot mixes and add one color on top of the first, after it has set.

Our standard rule of thumb: Make the Jello mixes about 10 minutes apart to avoid adding the second layer prematurely, causing the layers to mix together.

FAQs

Do jello shots get stronger the longer they sit? ›

Jello Shots, like life, are all about balance. That said, if you want a strong one, it is possible if you leave it in the fridge long enough. In a Supercall experiment, we found that the strongest Jello Shot that will set is three-to-one ratio of 80-proof alcohol to water, and it took a full day to become mostly solid.

Can I put lids on jello shots before they set? ›

Make sure your liquid is completely cool before adding lids so you don't get condensation forming on the inside of the lid. Set your jello shots: Put your jello shots in the fridge for 2-4 hours until set. Once ready to eat, set them out for your guests and enjoy!

Why do you need cold water for jello shots? ›

Pour a half-cup of ice water into the bowl and whisk to combine. Adding this to the gelatin (along with the spirits) helps it set and firm up more quickly, which is necessary to achieve that "jello" texture, so the colder the water then the better. Pour the mixture into plastic or paper shot glasses.

Does it matter how much vodka you put in jello shots? ›

A standard recipe made with 3 ounces of Jell-O powder calls for 5 ounces of 80-proof vodka and 11 ounces of water, but this results in a shot that tastes watered-down. To make a stronger shot, use just 4 ounces of water and between 8 and 14 ounces of vodka (to taste)

What makes jello shots not set? ›

Jello shots won't set properly if you add too much alcohol. Generally, a basic batch of jello shots is made with one cup of juice or water, one packet of gelatin, 1/2 cup of cold water and 1/2 cup of alcohol. However, jello shots can be made with as much as 2/3 cup alcohol without changing their texture.

Is 1 cup of vodka too much for jello shots? ›

This jello shot recipe uses 1/2 cup vodka for 12 shots = 1/3 ounce vodka per shot. That's 4 jello shots to equal 1 regular shot of vodka. Even if you take out the cold water and use 1 cup vodka = that's still only 2/3 ounce vodka per shot. This is typical of jello shots.

What is the water to alcohol ratio for jello shots? ›

In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup vodka, or other liquor. Place the mixture in the refrigerator to reach a consistent temperature. Place 1 (3-ounce) package any flavor gelatin in a separate bowl or glass measuring cup, and slowly add the remaining 1 cup boiling water.

What is the best liquor to use for jello shots? ›

Vodka and white rum are both great options for your alcohol, although other spirits, like gin, whiskey, tequila and brandy all work.

Should you chill jello shots upside down? ›

When making your jello shots set the cups upside down in the fridge so when you take the lid off the shot slids right out... Get my drink on!

Do you spray Jello shot cups? ›

Pour gelatin mixture into paper or plastic shot cups* and chill in refrigerator until set, 1 hour or more. *Reviewers suggest coating the shot cups lightly with cooking spray so the shots slide right out. Give each mini cup a quick wipe with a paper towel to remove excess and spread oil evenly.

Should you refrigerate jello shots upside down? ›

Or, if you are serving your shots out of plastic cups with lids, you can store them upside down in the fridge as they set. This way, the shot itself will be at the top of the cup and more accessible. If you go this route, you should also keep the shots in a large storage bin in case of leaks.

Can you substitute juice for water in jello shots? ›

Fruit juice: Give the shots a boost by using fruit juice instead of water (this works best when using flavorless gelatin powder). Most fruit juices will work, but avoid pineapple, mango, kiwi and papaya because they don't set well. Other alcohols: Vodka isn't the only alcohol that works well in jello shots.

Can you make jello shots with juice instead of water? ›

Then add the package of gelatin. Stir, or shake, if your container has a tight fitting lid, to dissolve. Add cold water or equivalent amount of ice, fruit juice, and then liquor. Definitely use ice instead of the cold water if you are having the party in less than 4 hours because it will solidify faster.

What happens if you don't use cold water for jello? ›

The boiling water is important because it helps to fully dissolve the Jello powder and ensures that it will set properly. On the other hand, if you were to use only cold water, it would not dissolve the Jello powder as effectively and could result in a mixture that doesn't set properly or has lumps in it.

Should you turn jello shots upside down? ›

That's where a new trick comes into play that promises to make downing those Jell-O shots at the party so much easier to consume: turn the shot upside down to prevent the Jell-O from sticking to the cup.

What is the best alcohol to use for jello shots? ›

Vodka and white rum are both great options for your alcohol, although other spirits, like gin, whiskey, tequila and brandy all work.

How long do jello shots have to sit in the fridge? ›

If you're wondering how long it will take for your jello shots to set, it depends on which type you make, but a general rule is two to four hours. A basic jello shot recipe should be allowed to set in the fridge for at least two hours. Four hours is better.
